As of October 30, 2025, because of a lawsuit, asylum seekers were not required to pay the annual asylum fee. 

 

The judge in the lawsuit said that she may allow the government to charge the annual asylum fee again, if the government fixes problems with how it is collecting the fee.

This pause of the requirement to pay the annual fee was temporary, and if your asylum application has been pending for more than one year, you are now required to pay the fee.
